Description

Yes, yet another sample spool. I've tried many and liked the Proto-Pasta one best:

  • Small inner diameter, to easily slip on the sample spools from my Proto-Pasta subscription.
  • Large enough for 100g samples
  • Works great with the roller-style spool holder I'm using, as well as spindle-based holders
  • Parts lock together easily
  • Prints with less than 100g of filament — yes, you can use your subscription sample to print a sample spool 🙂

But I saw a small number of opportunities for (admittedly minor) improvements:

  • More attachment points for both ends of the filament
  • Less thread needed to screw together securely
  • Added a small area to attach labels
  • More “rounded”, elegant look. (I tried to save even more material, but the outside frame became too wobbly).

The spool weighs a total of 92 grams, if you want to see how much filament is left on the spool. Just weigh it and subtract 92.

I redid the whole design in Fusion 360 but mark it as a remix of the Proto-Pasta design, to give proper credit for the inspiration.

Fusion and STEP files included.

For use with roller-style spool holders or rewinders such as Filamentalist, check out my full-size adaptor https://makerworld.com/en/models/1467563.

Version History

v1.01: Minute adjustments to properly fit the Spool Adaptor. But even the original should work fine.

Print Instructions

I strongly suggest using a layer height of 0.2mm or less. With 0.3mm, I had some issues with the thread overhangs. Can be easily fixed with an Xacto knife, but why bother. Also prints fine with a 0.6 mm nozzle. No supports needed.
