Description

1/2/2024 UPDATE: I have incorporated several minor design improvements to the parts to improve clearances, ease of printing, and ease of assembly. Parts require fewer supports as well. These updates are included in the Jet Engine Model for Kit-006 print profile. This is the latest and greatest profile, so I highly recommend using this from now on. The parts from the previous release, now renamed (OLD) Jet Engine Model for Kit-006, are still compatible with these new parts, however, so you don’t have to reprint the whole thing if you don’t want to.

 

Overview:

A cutaway model of a 2-spool high bypass turbofan. I designed the whole engine from scratch with cues to certain existing engines. For example, I think Rolls-Royce makes the best-looking fans, so there's some resemblance there... Since originally uploading to Thingiverse in 2016, the popularity of this model has grown far beyond expectations. The model has appeared in numerous publications, additive manufacturing expos/conferences, and is (for better or worse) being made and sold by a number of 3rd parties. However, rest assured that this is one of the official sources for this model. A bunch of remixes of this engine are out there, mostly in Thingiverse at the moment, if you are so inclined. I've also designed an alternate fan for this engine that more closely resembles GE and P&W engines. Check it out!

 

I uploaded a diagram with labels to all parts for reference. For more detailed instructions, the YouTube assembly guide at the bottom of this description walks you through the process.

 

Please refer to the BOM (Bill of Materials, aka Parts List) below for keeping track of what parts to print.

The required fasteners (screws, washers, and nuts) and ball bearings are listed below. However, to make your life easier, there is an official hardware kit that includes these components: Jet Engine Model Components Kit - 006.

  • Metric machine screw, allen socket cap, 2.5mm x 0.45mm x 10mm (QTY 100)
  • Metric flat washer, 2.5mm (QTY 200)
  • Metric hex nut, 2.5mm x 0.45mm (QTY 100)
  • 6204 open ball bearing 20x47x14 (QTY 2)
  • 6003 open ball bearing 17x35x10 (QTY 2)

The jet engine will look great in any filament, but what I recommended (and what is pictured) are the following:

OMG! This is my first not small 3d printed project and it is awesome. Need to sand some parts in LPT section to spin flawlessly and fuel injectors were a little bit tricky. Anyway I'm happy like a kid on xmas. PS: It was really hard to make color decision as lots of combinations would be looking good.

If I were doing it, First sections of turbine rotors are the compressor (HPC)or cold section (blue maybe) and the second section is the power section, hot section (Red) if that helps.

I want rotors to be metal - so will try silky grey pla as bambu metal pla looks dull (it is on my photo and it distantly is not reminding of a metal)

super cool build, I completed it over a span of 5 days. I love the amount of detail that went into every aspect of this and paired with the Bambu kit really completes the look. I do have a little bit of rubbing but otherwise everything came out great. I finished it off with the nose nacelle piece and a different jet engine stand. very well done design!

Superb model! Wanted to print this the moment I saw it. Building and printing is sometimes challenging, but I slowed the printing down to silent mode for the first few layers with the more challenging parts. I also printed the engine cover from another designer to finish it. Looks so cool!

Had to do some fitting adjustments to get the LP side to spin freely, but overall a well designed model. had some troubles with the fuel injectors tearing off the buildplate. printed two sets, and had enough completed ones for what I needed.

After building my first one, I will post the pictures once I receive my hardware kit, I found out that there is an issue with the angles of the fins. The angles of the fin from the Low-pressure side are the opposite of the high-pressure side which will make the engine not start due to stall. The front compressor (high pressure) is spinning Anti-clock wise looking from the front while the Power side (Low pressure) is angled clock wise.
