Description

PLEASE NOTE: The 3MF file has the orginal back on the 4th plate. Maker World would not let me upload the file with the new wood grain back due to the large size of the file and the long slice time. If you want the wood grain back then pull the vertical back to the right back onto the 4th plate and remove the original.

I, like @Steve_165797, loved @MarkRichardso_449235 's mantle clock, but really wanted to experiment with real wood grain displacement maps on it. I am pretty happy with how they turned out and decided I would post the results for anyone else who wants the wood grain look*.

All files are included from @Steve_165797, but the back and body of the clock have been modified with wood grain. Everything else is the same.

This was an experiment, in part, so the back door file is large due to me really pushing the face count for a higher resolution wood grain.

You may need to sink the body slightly into the bed due to the wood grain on the back of the body.

*Please note that I also painted the body and back to further enhance the wood grain look; I printed them in Bambu Labs matte brown PLA.

WoW! That looks really nice! I'm trying to get the same wood looking effect, how did you do that? Edit: I've experimented with some black spray paint and thinner and a brush.

Looks great! I used a combination of brown paints and a black wash to get my colors.

@user_3559578338 What clock mechanism did you use? Do you have a link?

Replying to @MakerCameron :
I'm sorry for the late response, it was harvest from a old battery operated clock.

Very nice model - To enhance the nice wood grain texture, I went all in and printed with wood-filled PLA (30% wood), sanded it (carefully), an then stained it with two different actual wood stains (dark walnut and Kona) before giving it a clear poly coat. Turned out excellent. I did end up using the separate 'sticks' and hour markers from the original model (I liked the crispness of the separate pieces) so it's a mix of that model and your remix. Plus I designed my own second had since my mechanism had seconds. Galaxy Black (Prusament) face features some sparkle which really fits in with this 50s/60s aesthetic I think. One of my favorite 3D printing projects to date.

bel modello, ben fatto. con un impregnante per legno, su una stampa bianca il risultato sembra vero legno.

This is great work. I still need to paint the body to get the final wood look, but the grain is very nice. Since the backplate is less visible I decided to print this without the grain.

I'd love to see your final painted wood grain! I'm not sure anyone else has posted a painted version.

This is lovely. Does the shell need supports to print? I see notches inside it presumably to stop and hold the front and back plates.

It does need support for the one notch closest to the bottom. I used the "only touching build plate" setting.

Is the cord just for looks or did you find a movement that uses one?

I took a movement from an old clock I found at an antique store; it took a bit of work to fit it in plus I had to modify the hands to fit on it. I would recommend one of the amazon ones that take a battery unless you want to do something similar to me.

I'm kinda obsessed with this at the moment! I printed it in wood PLA (30% wood), lightly sanded it (to avoid removing the nice texture), stained it with two different colored wood stains and then clear coated it. Nice shell - turned out great. Now moving forward with the rest of the build.
