Description

UPDATED 20240104 - mk10 version released. MUCH stronger, still less than 85g of material.

Prevent your spools from being crushed when vacuum sealing.

.

Spool Supports consist of two identical halves that snap together and sit just inside the spool's edge to prevent collapse.

Most of the Clear-ish Bambu spools have an inside dimension of 60mm and a diameter of 200mm, but all of the white Bambu spools found on my PLA Matte rolls seem to be 63.5mm. Please be sure to print the appropriate size for your spool. The 60x200 also fits most of the Polymaker spools.

I have attached three print profiles for the 60mm x 200mm version: PLA, PLA +, and PETG. Each has been custom-modified with slightly higher filament temperatures and areas of increased wall thickness. I will also create new profiles for the 63.5mm x 200m version to be released in the next day or two.

Uses about 85g of filament with this profile.

Enjoy!

UPDATE 20240104:

mk10 incorporates a solid ring in the middle to help prevent collapse in the area with the highest loads. I still recommend PLA + or better, but straight PLA may now work, maybe:) Just stay away from Matte PLA; Matte PLA does not have robust interlayer adhesion and may be more prone to failure.

Brilliant, does exactly what it says and works and fits perfectly. Fits my new Voronoi spool nicely too.

Funny, I saw your spool on Facebook a few days ago, and liked it before I saw that you downloaded the spool support:) Awesome spool design!

They work perfectly! I’ve printed 3 sets so far and will make sure every vac sealed spooled has the support 😊👌

awesome idea, but I had adherence issues. weirdly enough, the taller of the 2 spool guards printed “ok/functional” but definitely wouldn’t be a display piece. I printed these 3 separate times, firstly cancelled due to speghetti on first layers, second cancelled due to reviews saying thicker walls were needed, so I canceled before calibration finished, third resulted in the attached pictures all in one print. The 2 that are off of the build plate popped off as I removed it from the machine (X1-C). *Final note: this filament is about a month old in an AMS that is reading minimal humidity since day 3 of running. I will oven dry the filament and attempt a reprint, followed by an update. thank you for your time

Yikes! I have been using the Textured PEI Plate, gold colored. So far, after printing dozens of these with this plate, I have not needed a brim with PLA, PLA + or PETG. I will be publishing a mk10 version soon, which should be very strong. I just need to finish some additional testing to increase my confidence level further.

thanks for the reply. I’ve only ran it on the smooth plate (as I’m sure you saw) I’m excited to see stronger versions released. if you need an extra tester, my extra vacuum bags arrive in 72 hours.

Mine printed well, but broke when I used them. The idea is very good and the supports are well designed, but it is just not strong enough for vacuum storage. I am still giving five stars, however, because mine broke due to me pulling as much vacuum as possible, which could be considered user error. Other than that, they worked well on one spool that I did not pull too much vacuum on.

Sorry about that. Try printing one of the newer versions that have a ring in the center as well.

Aside from having to give this print a bit of love with the deburring tool and the supports taking forever to remove, this is a great design. I’ll likely print more in the future.

Fantastic idea, excellent design job. I printed it in basic PLA (2) walls and did some snaps and pops as I vacuum-sealed a spool. I will print more but use ABS, 3 walls, or more to play safe. But it works and holds. I don't know if the 63.5 is not a deformed spool, but the 60mm (Plate 2) is perfect. Good job. Thanks for sharing.

Why is there a need to vacuum seal an empty spool? It's there something I don't know? It shouldn't flex with a full spool right?

It's for a partially used spool. Strong vacuum sealers will bend the spool edges, not as dramatically as the empty one in the photo but enough to deform them.

Gee, you got only one boost!?! I wish I had more to give... It's not that fancy, but it does work flawlessly, and I know you put some work into it. It is a nice thing and well designed. Thanks for your work.

Very effective to maintain the spool shape.
