Description

By default, if you want to access to the extredur tension screw, you have to remove the hotend/extruder from the hotend.

I wanted a quick acccess to release tension for printing soft TPU (85A or less) to prevent filament jam into the extruder.

It is not easy because the screw is hidden by the toolhead, so I made a jig to easily do that. Just snap it on the carbon rods and push against the toolhead, then drill.

The screw head is 5.5mm, so I made the jig for a 7mm drill bit to let the screw pass trough. But there is not a lot of room to drill, You'll need a small drill and/or drill bit, just in cas I also created a 3 and 5mm jigs if you want to drill by step with smallers drill bits.

Setps :

  • Remove hotend, extruder and any part that could be damage when drilling
  • Put back the toolhead cover and secure the toolhead with masking tape (the drill bit pass trough both toolhead and cover)
  • Fix the jig on the carbon rods and push it against the toolhead
  • Slowly drill the hole with care
  • Cleanup plastic dust and reassemble the toolhead

** Tested on X1 Carbon only **

Is this really needed to modify the extreder tension screw ? I never did since I have the X1C and I print lots of different materials even different type of TPUs, what changes are made by screw/unscrew it ?

It helps to prevent extruder jam, specially with very soft TPU (85A and above), with 'regular' TPU (90A and more), it is not necessary

I print 83A stock without problems, that's why I asked

I had some issue with 85A (ninjaflex) that I was not able to resolve from software (profiles), I was able to print fine by releasing tension. however, if you don't have issue to print your tpu you don't need this mod ! in fact you can try it without making a hole, but you have to remove extruder to release the screw. The hole in the case is just a 'Quick access), usefull when you need to access it often

worked great, though for some reason the 7mm seemed more like a 6mm hole, so I used a 6mm drill bit and that worked
