From One Small Print to Changing Lives: My 3D Printing Journey
They say the best stories start with taking a chance, and mine began with my last few pounds and a dream. Fresh out of university, I was staring at a brand new Ender 3 box and my tiny room, wondering if I'd made a massive mistake.
But sometimes, life's best decisions don't make sense on paper. My nephew - this amazing, energetic kid with autism and ADHD - struggled to find toys that really worked for him. Watching him get frustrated kinda broke my heart. So I decided to learn how to 3D print, usually at 3 AM.
Now that first fidget spinner wasn't perfect. The layers were visible, the spinning wasn't smooth, but when I gave it to him... his whole face lit up. He didn't put it down for hours. His mum called me later that night, literally crying - it was the first time he'd been able to focus while doing homework.
Word spread through parent group chats. One request turned into ten, then fifty. I set up an Etsy shop and could barely keep up! Christmas was mad - I was literally sleeping next to the sweating printer, but every exhausted moment was worth it when I'd get photos of kids finding their perfect thing.
My mum, who works at a local dementia home, saw what these prints were doing for kids and had this brilliant idea. "Why not for our residents?". At this point upgrading to a P1P, getting THE smoothest little trinkets. The first time I watched an elderly man with advanced dementia light up while handling a sensory cube I'd printed... well, let's just say I had to pretend I had something in my eye.
Now I print hundreds of items for the home every year. The residents have their favourites, simple tactile ones tend to be their fave. It's incredible to see how something as simple as a 3D printed toy can bring such joy to people who sometimes struggle to connect with the world around them.
And the technology keeps evolving, AI is making design easier than ever. But at its heart, this journey isn't about the technology - it's about the smiles, the breakthrough moments, and the connections made.
I still have that first fidget spinner. It sits on my desk, reminding me that sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.
