Introduction

Failed to pull back filament error can be caused by multiple different variables & factors. This is a part of an series of Ams fixes that i have designed which can complement each other when used together. I do suggest you install all my fixes together for the 0ptimal effect to help your filament travel properly across the entire system which in turn can help improve, reduce or remove any potential Ams errors.

I have grouped all fixes into their respective Collection for ease of searching what to install.

V2 Collection are improvements done on the shortcoming of V1 Collection. Feel free to try V2 Collection and if it doesn't work properly then you can try the V1 Collection. You can easily find each of the Collection by clicking on the Collections tab on my profile.

Unfortunately there isn't a single fix that can 100% work for everyone. What works for others, may not work for you but my fixes is definately a great place to start and have worked for majority of the users. My fixes are precisely measured then modelled. A Proper Fix would have the highest chance to reduce or solve the error.

What is this?
Ams Buffer Fix For Failed To Pull Back Filament Error will correct and maintain a nearly 100% straight line to move the filament into the Ams buffer thus reducing wear on the external Ptfe tube. Its design allow the most smooth, least amount of friction and pressure for the proper angle to go into the Ams buffer thus greatly reducing the possibility of an Failed To Retract Filament error or similar errors from popping up.

Who needs this fix?
I believe that anyone with a Ams would benefit from this fix / enhancement regardless of do you have any problem or errors with the Ams / Printer. This will allow your Ptfe tube to be nearly 100% straight (laser and manually measured) when it entered the Ams Buffer buffer. In theory, there are only advantages and benefits after installing. There are literally no disadvantage to this fix.

Have this fix been tested?

This fix have been tested for on 1 X1C, 1 P1P and 2 P1S for about 93100 retractions so far.

Why choose this fix instead of other similarly designed fix?

This is ez to print but yet its very precisely measured and designed.

This part shown in the photo below (distance from end of fix to the Ams Buffer) is carefully calculated only after several literations and tests prints. I have arrived to the mostly optimal gap to separate the fix and the Ams Buffer to allow the filament to pass through with a smooth movement with the least amount of friction. In fact this is one of the most important measurement in the fix.

Pre installation

Please make sure that the hole in which the Ptfe pass through does not have any filament blocking it that might happen in rare cases during printing, If it does use something like this screw bit or anything to remove the filament before proceeding to the step below. Please only remove the filament bit but do not widen the hole please. If your Ptfe Tube goes through smoothly then there is no need to do this step.

Installation Video

Important:

This would be the most ideal route for the Ptfe tube if your Ams is on t0p of the printer. Its basically a huge C. Please try to make the Ptfe route like this. The most ideal length of Ptfe is 62cm IF your Ams is on t0p of the printer with NO riser. 62cm will be able to give you this ideal route.

If you have a riser just adjust the route to be somewhat similar for the proper effect.

Important Notes:

Note 1: This will NOT be compatible for those with the multiple Ams units or if you are using the multiple Ams HUB and its made specifically to users that only have one Ams Single Buffer .
Note 2: Please follow the instructional video carefully its very important.
Note3: This fix is designed to still allow you to able to use pretty much any avaliable Ptfe tube removal tool so you can still remove your Ptfe tube if you want to replace it or for whatever reasons.
Note 4: Hydra or Non Modified Ams can all benefit from this fix.

The screw that you needed for this Fix should be in one of the package that came with the printer likely from the Filament Holder or Scrapper or just find something similar to this specification below.

Its important to get the right size screw as for this fix to work, there must be no gap from the fix to the rear panel

Technical Write Up

Friction - The cause of most of the Ams filament failed to retract problem.

As shown in the following photo, the Ptfe tube that connects the Ams to the Ams buffer may and is often bent in an angle due to the printer placement like too close to the wall or foreign objects pushing against the Ptfe tube behind the printer or simply because of the height or placement of the Ams unit.

All of these creates bends or pressure on the shape of the Ptfe tube in turn creates a lot of friction, as the Printer and Ams is equipped with multiple sensors, these friction will cause filament not passing through the Ams to the printer smoothly and thus causing the Ams Failed To Retract Filament Error and similarly related errors.

So what is the possible solution to the problem?
Firstly we need to reduce friction for filament passing through Ptfe tubes? Simple! If we optimise the angle of the Ptfe it will allow the filament to enter and go through the Ams buffer with the least amount of friction and pressure.

So what i have created to solve the problem?
Firstly lets talk about the part where the Ams goes into the Ams Single Buffer buffer. I have ran multiple test on about 10 different test prints with different height to Ams buffer and distance away from the printer rear panel and if the Ptfe tube can be bend with the least amount of friction and pressure on the filament passing through. That is where i discovered and confirmed that ideally we will want the most straight angle to allow the filament feeding from the Ams into the buffer smoothly.

I measured with a laser measuring tool and verified manually to design a mount that will allow the Ptfe Tube to enter the Ams Single Buffer in a nearly 100% straight degree. This will help and allow the filament to go from the Ams to the Ams Single Buffer to the Printer smoothly and retract back with the least amount of pressure and friction. This fix can also solve wear issue on the Ptfe tube as less friction means less wear.

Read on only if you needed the X1C Special Condition Only

This is intended for a very small group of people with problem finding a fitting screw for their X1Carbon when trying to attach this fix to the rear panel.

Please do not use this if you are using P1P P1S X1C if you can find the 2 screws that are used for the installation of this fix. Using screws to attach the fix is still ideal. This Special condition is only for people who cant do that. This print profile is NOT for the rest of you.

If you have an X1C and you have problem finding a screw that fit the screw hole on the fix nearest to the Ams buffer then please read on to see the installation process for your machine.

Before installation please make sure that the hole in which the Ptfe pass through does not have any filament blocking it that might happen in rare cases during printing, If it does use something like this screw bit or anything to remove the filament before proceeding to the step below. Please only remove the filament bit but do not widen the hole please. If your Ptfe Tube goes through smoothly then there is no need to do this step.

This fix uses 5 pieces of 6X2mm and probably 6x3mm magnet can fit too. Due to different tolerance of machines the hole for the magnet can appear to be too tight or loose.

If the magnet is too tight then use a hammer to lightly knock in the magnet so its flat across the surface of the screw. Do not knock the magnet all the way in. Levelled with the surface works properly,

If the magnet is too loose simply add a SMALL dab of glue then fit in the magnet then wait AT LEAST 30 to 45min before installing to your printer to ensure the glue fumes does not damage your printer.

You do not need glue as long as the magnet is not loose enough to fall off. Do make sure all magnets are levelled with the surface of the fix.

Installation Video

After completing the installation of magnets you can follow the above guide for the same way to install this fix.

The screw on the Left In green words have to be tight. This is the only firm support on the fix so please make sure its tight but don't over tighten and destroy the threads.

The screw on the Right in yellow words are meant to be for alignment guide purpose. You will still need a screw in this hole. Just find the screw with the largest possible body that you can find, Below 9.87mm in length. Try not to use a screw that is too loose so at least the screw can help the fix stay in its position despite not being held by screw threads. The magnet behind the fix should hold it in place. Not the 0ptimal way but a solution still.

There will not be a version with cable holder because the magnet alone might not be able to hold the weight of the cable. It should only be sufficient to hold the Ptfe tube aligned.

Additional Notes

The error itself is complicated and non definitive. Whatever cause the error today might not be the same area that cause the error again, same with person A and Person B setup, as the error itself is mainly due to tension with friction triggering the sensors in the machine.

I would suggest you download and try and install all my fixes together for the proper effect as together they will ensure a smooth delivery of the filament with much lesser friction (read write ups) and hopefully that will help and reduce or resolve the error. If you use only one or 2 of the fixes the error could still happen as there are still other area might still be causing excessive friction.
