Raising my kids with a family motto: "in this family we fix things". and so I design and print models to fix their toys and things the dogs chew on. when we run out of things to fix I print new things to break and later fix. it's a fun cycle.

Back in 2020, for my son's 7th birthday, I 3D printed a 2-foot-tall version of Maui's fishhook from the movie Moana. I printed in white, then sanded it lightly, applied some stain and poly coat as though it was wood, and the result was a convincing bone-like appearance. I wrapped the handle in twine and gave it to him with a promise: "play with this, use it up and when it breaks I'll fix it and you can keep on playing".
Here we are years later and he has finally broken it - he snapped the tip off the hook. I hunted through my old STL files and found the original tip part (I printed this in sections with a wooden peg helping to hold each part together). In the years that passed my old printer died and I got a shiny new Bambu P1P (later upgraded to a P1S) that is much more capable and with it was able to print the replacement part.
A dab of superglue and a shake of baking soda (cures superglue very well, it's great to filling seams) and now his old toy is ready for staining once again. He wants to do it himself this time; he's now 11 years old and eager to help me fix every broken toy in the neighborhood.
And that's my 2025 outlook - I'll be hunting for broken things, fixing them, and hopefully improving on them as we go. All the while instilling the maker mantra in my son's outlook on life: play with your toys, use them up - that's what they are for, and we can bring the favorites back to life to be played with again and again!
