Musa is one of three genera in the family Musaceae. The genus includes 83 fruit species of flowering plants producing edible bananas and plantains. The biological family that includes all bananas is called Musaceae. Common banana plants carry scientific names like Musa acuminata or Musa paradisiaca. Because of its botanical name, "musa" is simply the word used for "banana" in several languages, including Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian.
