The seven tans are two large right-angled triangles, one medium right-angled triangle and two small ones, a square and a parallelogram. The aim of the puzzle is to form a figure using all the pieces without overlapping them.
Although the exact dating of the tangram is not known, some sources attest to its spread in the 19th century.
