Why I'm Glad This Design Didn't Work
I recently tried something new by entering Maker’s Supply’s limited kit challenge. My idea sounded simple: place one LED behind each number on the clock so that, as each hour arrives, the corresponding number lights up. My first idea was like the clock in the cover image. I’ve designed more complex projects before, so this one seemed fairly straightforward. I’ve also done wiring projects like this in the past, but there was always a guide telling me exactly what to do: this plugs in here, that connects there, and these are the wires you need. This project was different. While some of that existed, I had to solve a lot of the wiring challenges on my own. One of the biggest problems was mounting the transmitter coil on a secondary hour hand behind the clock face. That meant I needed a way to keep the wires from tangling as it rotated. My solution was to use a slip ring, but the connectors on the slip ring didn’t match the LED kit connectors. To make everything work together, I had to daisy-chain a long series of wires and adapters. And did it work? NO! That turned out to be the best part. It didn’t work the way I expected, which meant it needed a complete redesign. The transmitter coil didn’t behave the way I thought it would, the clock ended up being much larger than I wanted, and the slip ring wires were so thin that they heated up whenever I powered the LEDs.That setback gave me the opportunity to step back, rethink the goal, and start fresh. Several people had suggested a different approach to the clock, but I kept pushing those ideas aside because I was focused on my original concept. Looking back, I almost missed out on a much better design. What might have looked like failure was actually an opportunity to build something even better. After a full day of redesigning, followed by two more days of printing, testing, iterating, and printing again, I finally arrived at the version I have now. It's a clock I'm genuinely proud of. This time, it was a success. It does exactly what I imagined over a month ago, even though the mechanism behind it is completely different. The overall design looks much better, has far fewer moving parts, is easier for others to print, and—if I can be a little biased as the designer—I think it looks really cool. So, fellow creators, just because something doesn't work the way you intended doesn't mean you failed. If you give up on the design there, then maybe, yeah, you could call that a failure. But if you step back, learn from the problem, and keep going, you haven't failed. You've succeeded! One More Try Kaladin - Light Up Version!
✨Inspiration: The vast majority of my models are book-related. I use 3d modeling as a way to keep interacting with a story/series long after I finish them. This year has seen a lot of fun and original (I think) models designed to accompany your desktop or bookcases. This model, however, I am most proud of. The concept was taken from a pivotal scene from Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings that sets one of the main characters on his path out of the darkness. It was one of the early scenes that helped cement this series as my fav! ✏️Design Process I initially designed Kaladin as one of my Bookshelf Buddies to go along with Syl, his spren. It was a good model and hit all the right feels, but it needed something extra to make it special. I toyed around with nano LEDs and began modeling a channel down his arm to house the wires. Luckily, I didn't put too much effort into this as Bambu Lab came out with their Wireless Inductive Coil Kit. Housing the kit components inside of the Honor Chasm and incorporating some of the Rosharan flora was a no-brainer. The last cherry on top was using Makerlab's Chroma Canvas to make a backdrop adapted from Jessi Ochse's great artwork Kaladin and Syl before the Honor Chasm, which really sets the mood. It fits nicely between the Dragonsteel Books' Leather Bound Editions if you are lucky enough to own a set! The new Wireless Inductive Coil Kit has so much potential to help me up my model game! Thanks Everyone!! 🔨Assembly Assembly is simple! Connect the coil to the board with the supplied wire. Slide in the coil upside down into the slot inside the chasm. Slide in the board into the slot inside the chasm. Secure the front of the board with two m2 by >6 mm screws. Slide in the back plate or optional backdrop plate. Glue and paint Kaladin (depending on which version you print). Paint the rockbuds. Glue in your choice of LEDs into the bottom of Syl and the rockbuds (I used cool white for Syl and warm white for the rock buds). Glue Syl into Kaladin's hands. Then setup and enjoy!

Finally Finished my model for the wireless coil kit challenge! It came around just in time as I about a third of the way through with a wired led version. This saved soo much time and expanded what I could do. Huge Thanks! to bambu for the support.
This one is a shout out to the moment that cemented the Stormlight Archive as my favorite series. Adding these led effects really brought the model to life. The last minute addition of the Chroma Canvas backdrop really sets the atmosphere. The wireless lighting method really kept the interactiveness of my original model so you can pick it up and examine it without worrying about wires.

Hey Maker World. I have posted another model: Light Up Mantel Clock. This model came about as the result of Maker's Supply's kit challenge. The kit for this one was the wireless LED kit. It is definitely a great kit so go check it out. I really enjoyed this process and would like to give a huge thanks to Maker's Supply for helping support this design. #Kitchallenge #Wirelessinductivediy

I was very fortunate to have my idea selected for the Kit Challenge. To bring my concept to life, I received the "Wireless Inductive DIY" kit along with all the necessary materials from MakerWorld. My idea was to integrate the kit into a sort of metal detector and make small gemstones light up with LEDs whenever they were approached. A major challenge was fitting all the components, especially the electronics, together precisely; this required more prototypes than originally planned. But in the end, everything worked out.(Edited)
