Description

(Updated - see notes below) Stay awhile and listen! This print is a recreation of the Tristram Cathedral from 1996's Diablo 1. The was the jumping off point to the adventures in the dungeons below. This model use LED backlight boards and red PLA ‘gels’ to simulate the spooky lighting coming from within the cathedral.

 

This model is available in two profiles:

  • The main version has brick and shingle textures baked in. This version is more detailed but takes longer to print.
  • A second version is available in a separate profile with smooth surfaces. This profile is significantly faster to print at the expense of detail.

I made some small changes to improve the ability to print cleanly along with some adjustments to proportions. For reference, please see the game version of the cathedral to the right.

  • The windows peak at an angle instead of being rounded.
  • The tower is slightly smaller. My hypothesis is that it was so tall in the game so as to be visible from the portion of the map to the North. When printed, if felt awkward at the printed size.
  • The exposed beams in the roof were adjusted so that they could print without supports.
  • The interior was not visible in the game. I've added a row of arches (to support the lights) along with a Pentagram and a trap door to access the dungeons below.

Assembly

  • Connect one LED board to the power source.
  • Use a jumper cable to connect the first and second boards as shown.
  • Rotate the boards so that their backs are facing each other.
  • Alight the LED boards with one of the gels on either side.
  • The LED boards won't slight perfectly - they will be offset to allow room for the connectors.
  • Slide the LEDs and gels into the back of the cathedral onto the two ledges.
  • Ensure that the power cord is coming out of the back.
  • Press the pentagram into the slot in the cathedral back.
  • Slide the cathedral back into place.
  • The power cord can pass through the notch in the back.
  • The structure can be placed onto the optional ground plates to add some of the trees and tombstones visible in the game.
The base can be assembled by using the 4 pegs for a press-fit. 

Printing Tips

  • Because the model has interior details and prints mostly in one large piece, it is recommended to use a neutral color filament (most likely gray) so that interior painting is not required.
  • An opaque filament works well so that light is not transmitted through the walls.
  • Both profiles were test printed with Elegoo PLA.

 

Updates

October 18th, 2024

  • Created a new, more detailed ground model that is configured for AMS. The version in the main profile can print on A1 Mini with minimal assembly. A version for P1, X1 & A1 (that doesn’t require assembly) is available in a separate profile.
  • Fixed a few loose bricks at the bottom front of the cathedral.
  • Adjusted the width of the light gels for fit.
  • Wirt has visited.

This model is excluded from my commercial license given that it is a fan project.
