Description

BinaryHUD's “Household Annoyance” Series

Chapter 1 - The Compost Bin Lid

One of the things I missed about a now defunct Compost Caddy by SimpleHuman was what I would call the “bag lock” - a secondary part of the lid whose purpose is to prevent bag “slippage” when dumping items into said bin - the heavier the waste, the more likely your bag falls inside itself into the dark abyss of chaos. For most other bins like trash, this is usually remedied with the elastic tie or knot portion of a bag which you cinch the trash bag shut with before throwing it into the garbage; however, this piece of technology does not usually exist for the world of compost bags.

My replacement compost bin woefully lacked this feature. So I made one.

This is a simple parametric model of a rounded torus with an L-lip cut out of it to secure it on top of my compost bin (if you're curious, here's a link). The included default model will fit a bin which is:

  • Outer Diameter - 7 20/64" (185.737mm)
  • Inner Diameter - 6 57/64" (175.022mm)

To adjust the model to fit your rounded bin, you just need to measure from inner-to-inner (Inner Diameter) and outer-to-outer rims.

(Since this is my first parametric model and I have very little time, there are limits to the parameters that I was able to get working - if there's more demand for others I may make a v1.1 with those such as the height of the lock, the height of the inner edge, etc.)

Printing Tips:

  • The more food ready the material or post-processing, the better
  • No supports likely needed
