Description

Uploading mostly just for my personal use, but if you find it helpful as well, then great! I wanted a fun shaped magnet board, but it seemed impossible to find such a thing for sale, so I chose to DIY my own instead.

Process:

  • Purchased thin sheet of steel & tin snips from hardware store
  • Printed frames & backings (and glued together both halves of the largest size)
  • Placed frames on top of steel sheet, traced the inside of the star using a needle to scratch the shape into the metal
  • Cut metal to size, trimming until it fit easily into frames
  • Took old black t-shirt and cut fabric roughly to size, slightly larger than the frames
  • Placed fabric over the metal, then inserted the metal into the frame to trap the fabric in place
  • Trimmed excess fabric and glued edges to the back of the metal
  • Covered glued fabric edges with printed backing piece
  • Glued all pieces together

This way, the jagged edges of the cut metal can be easily hidden behind the clean looking frame, and the fabric covers the unattractive unfinished metal sheet. It's not perfect but the end result looks very nice!
