Description

TBJ RigBuddy – TPU Ball Joint Pose Figure

The TBJ RigBuddy is a fully articulated 3D printed ball-joint mannequin designed for drawing reference, stop-motion animation, animation projects, and as a base for custom realistic action figures.

Materials

  • TPU: Polymaker TPU (flexible ball joints and body sections)
  • PETG: Elegoo PETG (structural components)
  • PLA: Sunlu PLA (rigid parts and supports)

Design and Features

This is a blank poseable dummy with a complete ball-joint system covering the torso, arms, legs, and head. The TPU ball joints provide smooth movement and reliable pose retention. The squared, simplified design breaks the human body down into basic shapes, making it easier to understand proportions and overall construction.

The legs use a hybrid construction: they transition from the knee through a PLA section with a fully TPU rod running through it.

The feet include built-in pockets for optional magnets. Magnets with an 8.08mm diameter (available at Hobby Lobby, Amazon, or similar stores) can be added to the feet for improved stability on metal surfaces. A small amount of glue can be used to secure the magnets if needed.

Assembly

  1. The joints consist of TPU balls that fit into printed sockets.
  2. Recommended Gluing: Insert the TPU rods into the socket side of the TPU balls. Apply a small drop of Chameleon glue (or any superglue / cyanoacrylate) inside the socket before insertion to create a permanent bond.
  3. The PLA and PETG structural parts snap together securely without glue. However, applying a small amount of glue on these connections is recommended to maximize durability and keep the entire figure assembled for as long as possible.
  4. Snap the assembled ball-and-rod joints into the corresponding sockets on the body, limbs, and head. The TPU material allows for a firm fit while maintaining pose ability.

Maintenance Note: If the bicep TPU parts or leg sockets become loose over time, apply a small amount of glue to the joint area and let it dry completely. This helps restore tightness.

It is recommended to print and test a few individual joints first to verify tolerances and assembly.

Future Releases

Additional accessories will be released, including stands and other useful parts. Separate cutout files and cutter tools will also be provided. These cutter tools are intended specifically for making custom modifications to the figure.

Purpose

The RigBuddy serves as a versatile poseable reference tool focused on proportions and construction. It supports:

  • Drawing reference using simplified shapes for better understanding of body proportions and construction
  • Digital art reference (pose the figure and take reference photos)
  • Stop-motion animation filming
  • General animation rigging and reference
  • Customization into realistic action figures (sculpting, painting, etc.)
  • Other posing and display needs

Note: This figure is designed for long-term, repeated use rather than single-use applications.
