Made to Be Played — The Story Behind My First 1,000 Downloads (Story #1) This easy print spin top was the first patopato design to hit 1,000 downloads. It also made me more certain about the direction I want to take: I don't want to make models that just look good on a shelf. I want to make toys that are **made to be played — not just displayed**. The idea came from watching my kid play with a spin top. I suddenly realized: the structure is perfect for 3D printing — **no supports needed**, and the mechanism (gears, axle) integrates cleanly into a single print. That feeling of "simple, clever, and ready to play right off the printer" — that's the patopato twist I'm always chasing. I designed my own version in about 30 minutes. The result surprised me: clean print quality, and it spins for over a minute. I uploaded it to MakerWorld, but downloads were slow at first. The next day, I retook the cover photo — this time making it obvious at a glance: *this is a spin top*. That one change brought in 400 extra downloads in a single day. **Two things I learned from this:** 1) **Don't follow trends.** Make the toy you actually want to make — and actually want to play with. That's what lasts. 2) **Your cover photo is the door to your design.** The model matters, but getting people to click in matters just as much.
