Overview
This is a highly versatile, fully parametric storage container featuring a robust mechanical hinge design, a secure front snap clasp, and full text customization. Unlike generic "print-in-place" models that often fuse or break upon removal from the build plate, this box is engineered from the ground up as a component-based assembly.
The box, lid, and hinge pin are generated as entirely separate parts, allowing you to optimize print settings (such as orientation and infill) for each individual piece. This ensures maximum strength, clean surface finishes, and zero wasted filament.
Key Design Features
- Slide-Through Hinge Design: The print-in-place snap pins have been completely replaced with an open-ended, continuous-bore knuckle pathway. A separate, dedicated hinge rod slides completely through the outer box hinges and the inner lid hinge, distributing mechanical stress evenly across the entire back spine.
- Intelligent Parametric Scaling: Fully compatible with OpenSCAD's Customizer panel. Built-in geometric safety limits ensure that even when scaling the box up to its maximum size 250x250x250, the hinges automatically scale, adapt, and remain physically anchored to the box walls rather than detaching at large corner radii.
- Targeted Clearance Control: Features a refined default movement clearance of 0.4mm. This clearance applies directly to the mating gaps between the interlocking hinge knuckles and expands the internal bore pathway, while leaving the physical hinge rod perfectly un-deformed. The result is a smooth, swinging hinge that won't seize up or wobble.
- Custom Text Modality: Supports independent 3D text placement on three separate faces: the Top Lid, the Front Face, and the Back Spine. Choose between Engraved (recessed subtraction) or Embossed (raised protrusion). The underlying code uses automated boolean clipping to ensure raised or sunken text never breaches or distorts the smooth, hollow interior core of the box.
- Optimized Print Layout: The "All Parts" generation layout automatically rotates and shifts the lid upside down, dropping its topmost face perfectly flat onto the build plate ($Z = 0$). This ensures that both the box bottom and the customizable lid print without requiring any supports.
Print Settings & Assembly Guide
- Part Selection: Use the customizer drop-down menu to isolate and print individual parts (Box Bottom Only, Lid Only, or Hinge Rod Only) if you experience a localized failure or want to change colors mid-project.
- Material Recommendations: PLA works excellently for everyday storage. For structural use-cases or rugged environments, PETG or ASA is highly recommended for the box and lid to give the front clasp more spring-elasticity.
- Hinge Rod Orientation: The hinge rod is designed with small 45° chamfered ends for easy alignment. Print the rod flat on the build plate. For optimal strength, print the rod with at least 4-5 perimeters (walls) or 100\% infill so it does not shear under pressure.
- Assembly: Simply align the lid knuckle between the box knuckles, and push the printed hinge rod through the open side hole. If your printer over-extrudes slightly, a standard 3mm drill bit (or the size matching your selected rod_diameter) can be used to easily clear the bore path.
