Description

This model was developed to teach k-12 students about how/why we use Brace frames in construction.

You will need to print (8) M8x16 bolts w/ nuts to complete the model. I used BATTCAVE's model, which can be found Here

To teach the lesson, have the students first assemble the frame without the cross braces. Have them test it out and notice how wobbly it is. Then, have them attach the cross braces and notice how much sturdier the frame is.  We then explain how the forces act throughout the frame. Why is it so wobbly without the crossmembers? Why do we have two crossmembers and not just one diagonal?

For some student groups, we print each type of element in a different color to match their instruction sheets (i.e. bases are grey, verticals are green, horizontal is blue, and crossmembers are red). This color coding seems to help minimize frustration when assembling the initial frame (honestly, the kids get it…its the adults we tend to have trouble with ;P )
