What is The Standard Model?
The Standard Model is physics best working theory describing the universe. It explains the fundamental particles and forces (excluding gravitational “forces”) that make up OUR Universe.
This Model Specifically Looks at Quarks. But what is a Quark?
Quarks are a sub-category of elementary particles, meaning they cannot be broken down into smaller particles. There are 6 Flavours (Types) of Quarks: Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top and Bottom. Quarks have defined properties such as charge, mass, spin, colour charge. Quarks are bound together in groups to create larger particles, like a Proton or Neutron.
Hadrons
Protons and Neutrons are part of a category of particles within the standard model know as Hadrons. Hadrons are defined as, particles made up of Quarks bound together by the strong nuclear force.
Hadrons are further categorized into two groups.
Baryons – Made of three quarks. (e.g. Protons and Neutrons)
Mesons – Made of one Quark and one Anti-Quark.the the
Hadrons are held together by gluons, the force carriers of the strong force.
Gluons
Gluons are massless elementary particles that act as mediators of the strong nuclear force, which bind Quarks together inside hadrons. They are represented by the squiggly white line between the Quarks within the baryon in this model.
