Description

Update: Version 3.1 uploaded, improves convenience at loading/unloading spools, thicker base, thicker spool.

I had issues with soft TPU (85A and lower) stretching and causing messy print when using the long bowden tube that goes behind the printer. So I figure mounting the spool directly on top of the printer and directly feeding the toolhead will make the filament stretch less, and this design seems to work for me.

Except for materials that require enclosure this has been my go to external spool.

  • Easy installation and removal.
  • Should fit most filament rolls like eSun.
  • Print in PETG or the smoothest material you have.
  • Alternatively a bit of grease would help.

It’s a little wonky, but it works. I had to jam 2 pieces of poster putty into the bearings to show them down. without that, when the extruder makes a fast move from one side of the plate to the other, it jerks the spool and it keeps spinning, dumping filament onto the plate.

i tried to lube the 608 bearings with bicycle chain lube, and it somewhat slowed them down, they don't spin as long. if you want to, feel free to try it out!

best top spool holder design by far. I cant wait to unleash the tpu hammer reckoning. i printed in trans petg in 2 batches so it took a little longer but looks very cool. installed the bearings easily and am able to print tpu perfectly. FYI it does fit on sanjas riser, not perfectly but it hasnt fallen down yet lol

I modified the spool hub with a hot knife to add a clearance notch so the spool can drop down directly onto the holders. This makes loading the spool much easier. I recommend updating the design to either eliminate the side rings or add this kind of notch, perhaps in two or three positions around the ring.

I've had a chance to print with this a few times now on my P1S using Bambu 85A TPU. performance has been great so far. The spool feeds very freely which prevents stretch that can cause under extrusion. My old gripe is there is not a lot of clearance built in for getting the spool between the support arms, which makes getting the spool on rather difficult. this could probably be remedied with a couple of clearance slots on the sides of the center hub which would allow the spool to drop into place without angling things. Ultimately it's a good design that does the job. Thank you for sharing it!

The spool support is perfect unfortunately the bottom of the stand had an overhang causing the material not to adhere properly but it does not affect use it fits perfectly on the riser

Awesome design works amazingly well! The multi color wasn’t on purpose (I ran out of pink) but I think it makes it look even better!

Could you make a printable Bering?

in my opinion it is impractical to 3d print a bearing, what i can suggest is you go and buy 2 fidget spinners, they should have the 608 bearing needed. if you're lucky, you might find a spinner that has additional bearings as the weights like i did.
