1:2000 Scale Model of the NS Savannah Nuclear-Powered Cargo Ship—A Legacy of Atomic Age Aesthetics

The NS Savannah, America's first commercially operational nuclear-powered ship, launched in 1962, showcased the peaceful applications of nuclear technology while also functioning as a luxurious passenger liner. Measuring 596 feet in length, this vessel, propelled by nuclear power, boasted a speed of 21 knots. Its design masterfully blended cutting-edge technology with maritime tradition, resulting in a unique and elegant vessel, a technological marvel of its time. During its service, it served as both a nuclear power demonstration vessel and a luxury cruise liner, exhibiting the potential of peaceful atomic energy applications. However, over time, operating costs escalated, and the development of nuclear-powered ships faced numerous constraints. Today, the NS Savannah is decommissioned, and, as an aesthetic legacy of the atomic age, it has been converted into a museum and is docked in Baltimore.

This 1:2000 scale model of the Savannah measures 9.5cm in length, retaining nearly all of the original ship's iconic features with exceptional precision. Due to having only an AMS Lite, I simplified the colors to black, white, grey, and silver for compatibility. To conserve filament and enhance detail, I've placed the crane framework on a second plate. After printing, it requires simple gluing to the ship's hull printed on the first plate; the assembly details are shown below.

I printed this using the default 0.4mm nozzle, high-precision 0.12mm layer height printing, resulting in a total print time of approximately 3 hours. Although time-consuming, the final result is flawless.
