Description

The Brasilia Planter

Overview
This mid-century modern planter is inspired by the iconic Brasilia series of MCM furniture. Combining timeless design with intentional functionality, this planter is the perfect way to incorporate plants into a mid-century modern aesthetic. With inner dimensions of 4" wide, 8" long, and 4" tall, it can accommodate up to two 4" plants side-by-side. It also features a drainage system that facilitates plant health, prevents fungus gnats, and enables the easy removal of excess water from the soil.

The planter consists of several parts:

  • 1x - Main Body (which acts as a drainage reservoir)
  • 1x - Removable Planter Insert (which features drainage holes, allowing excess water to drain into the main body reservoir).
  • 2x - Legs

The pictured print was created using Bambu Lab Matte Dark Brown PLA.

Printing:

  • Recommended Settings: Main Body and Planter Insert
    • 0.2mm layer height
    • 3 walls (if using a 0.4mm nozzle) or 2 walls (if using a 0.6mm nozzle)
    • 10% infill
    • No supports
  • Recommended Settings: Legs
    • 0.2mm layer height
    • Enough walls (I just set it to 10) to print solid all the way though.
  • Other Printing Notes:
    • To ensure a snug and stable fit, the tolerances on this model are fairly tight. If your printer tends to produce parts that fit together too tightly, I would recommend adjusting your horizontal expansion settings to give a little more wiggle-room. In Bambu Studio, this setting is called “X-Y Contour Compensation”. Setting this value to something like -0.1 should provide more than enough tolerance if you're concerned about parts not fitting together well.

Post-Printing:

Thanks to the tight tolerances, the legs should simply press-fit into the bottom of the main body. For extra peace-of-mind, a drop of super glue applied to the leg insertion holes will guarantee an extra strong fit.

The planter insert should slide in and out of the main body with slight resistance. If the movement is not as smooth as you would like, I recommend applying a thin coat of wood wax (I have this brand) and the sliding action should be very smooth. I recommend doing this if you already have some on hand, but it is not necessary.

Dimensions:

  • The interior dimensions of the planter insert are exactly 4" wide, 8" long, and 4" tall. You can easily fit two 4" plants side-by-side in this planter, or 3+ smaller plants.
  • The overall dimensions of the assembled unit (planter insert + main body/legs) are 4.5" wide, 8.5" long, and 6.1" tall.
