Description

This is my rendition of an 18th century British naval cannon. It has been simplified for assembly and the rigging has been left off due to simply it wont print well and assemble well at this scale; I also left out the Quoin and Stool Bed. This is geared more to a toy for a child (sturdy filling) or something to toss into a fish tank (PETG), or a hobbyist for fun. This was drawn from looking at some historical photos of the actual cannons and drawn form that. This was not drawn with historical scale (not a lot of data and quite frankly varies from manufacture to manufacture and year made).

It will come with 2 sets of wheels; with or without a hub embossment . I personally like the look of hubbed wheels, historically they would not have them. It also has optional TPU tires for the wheels. Not required, this model was intend to have a ridged rolling axle, and the TPU can help. The axle is included in the cannon plate; a 1/8 inch brass dowel rod is the original intent. So if you are planing on using a screw, dowel or other pin for the axle, you wont need to print this either.

The capsquare (top hinge plate for the cannon studs) will need to be either glued or thermally formed to the carriage. I tried to find alternatives to fasten this; nothing was strong, repeatable and looked clean so I deleted that. The cannon barrel has a bore hole and 2 pan (wick) holes; this allows it to be mounted either way. The pan hole, I stuck a piece of green TPU in it. I you could use some other rope or material that is about 1.75mm just fine. This also allows for blow holes to help pop things out of it that will likely get rammed down the barrel. This cannon can NOT and should NOT be attempted to fire blanks or rounds; no part of its design was meant to take any type of pressure related to that kind of use. It is a non-functioning display or toy.

Once assembled, the cannon is able to be rolled around on a ridged live axle and played with, set for display, or tossed in a fish tank (it should sink in fresh water, you can toss some fishing weights down the breach if needed or glue them on the carriage as cannon balls).

Steps to build:

  1. Print the “Cannon & Mount  Hardware” plate. You can remove the 2 axles if you plan on using something else (1/8 inch)
  2. Look at the "Wheel Selection" plate and choose 4 wheels (has 4 hubbed and 4 non-hubbed).
  3. Move your 4 selected wheels to “Carriage Assembly” and print that (supports are needed) {historically the carriage and wheels are wood}.
  4. Optional: print the “TPU Wheel Covers”.
  5. Place the cannon body in the carriage (knob on the breach goes to the tapered end of the carriage)
  6. Glue or thermally set the capsquares (hing plate) over the trunnions (knobs on cannon).
  7. Insert the axle into the carriage and place the wheels on it (hub out if hubbed wheel){leave a little clearance between the carriage and wheel}[wheels can hang on by interference; but you can thermally peen the ends or glue them to the shaft for more retention]
  8. Optional - slip on the TPU tires for the wheels.
  9. Optional -  insert a piece of TPU filament or other wick like material in the pan (wick hole) for aesthetics.
