Bill of Materials
Description
I needed to hide a key away for someone to check in on my home while I was away, so I made this model from scratch.
This model is a simple hidden key box (hide-a-key) with magnets. The file includes 3 sizes of boxes to fit common keys (Kwikset, Schlage, and Masterlock), each with three different thicknesses to hold 1, 2, or 3 keys, and 3 different clearances of each lid size. Simply pick the plate for the key type and skip the two boxes and two lids you do not wish to print, then press in two 15x3mm magnets (with a drop of glue if desired).
The lid is intented to be a friction fit, so if one of the three provided clearances don't work for your printer, you can either edit the “Lid_Clearance” parameter in Fusion 360 or scale one of the existing lids along ONLY the Y-axis in order to fine tune your fitment.
No supports are required.
I found that 0.005" clearance worked better on my X1C with PLA and 0.015" clearance worked better for ABS.
The Fusion file is fully parameterized and has descriptions of all parameters. As noted in the file, the “Lid_Clearance” parameter only affects the lid. If you need to experiment with different clearances on a custom file, you only need to re-print the lid with each adjustment.
