The Aircraft
Beechcraft Starship
The Beechcraft Starship, introduced in 1986, was an ambitious leap forward in aviation design. Developed by Beechcraft and featuring engineering by Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites, the Starship was a turboprop business aircraft with an innovative canard configuration and pusher propellers. Built almost entirely of composite materials, it was decades ahead of its time in lightweight construction and aerodynamics. The futuristic design included a swept wing, no tailplane, and large windows, offering passengers an unparalleled combination of performance and comfort. Unfortunately, the Starship struggled to gain commercial success due to its high production costs, limited payload capacity, and conservative buyer reception. Only 53 units were built, making it a rare collector’s aircraft today. With a wingspan of 54.5 feet, a cruise speed of 300 knots, and a range of 1,575 nautical miles, the Starship stands as a bold, if ultimately flawed, experiment in pushing aviation boundaries.
