The Aircraft
Stearman PT-17
The Stearman PT-17, introduced in 1934, is an enduring symbol of military pilot training during WWII. Built by the Stearman Aircraft Company, later acquired by Boeing, this biplane trainer became a cornerstone of aviation education for thousands of Allied pilots. Its rugged construction and straightforward design made it an ideal platform for teaching basic flight skills, aerobatics, and even recovery from spins. The PT-17’s open cockpit exposed trainees to the elements, adding to its charm and the challenge of flying it. More than 10,000 were produced, and its legacy has been carried on by civilian owners who use them for airshows, crop dusting, and personal enjoyment. With a wingspan of 32 feet, a cruise speed of 97 knots, and a range of 505 nautical miles, the Stearman continues to inspire nostalgia and respect for the golden age of aviation.
The Model
This was one of my early models and I'm in the process of taking some new pics. But pay close attention to the stagger of the wings and orientation of the N struts near the tips. Please let me know if you need assistance and I will further refine the model. One of the challenges was with the rear fuselage strut and getting it in the windscreen frame.
