Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (Russian: Иосиф Виссарионович Сталин, Georgian: იოსებ ბესარიონის ძე სტალინი; 18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953; note: Stalin's official birthday during his rule was listed as 21 December 1879, but historical research indicates 18 December 1878), a Georgian, Soviet proletarian revolutionary, statesman, and military leader, was the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Union and the paramount leader of the Soviet Union (1924–1953),
Originally surnamed Dzhugashvili, Stalin participated in revolutionary activities while attending an Orthodox seminary. He joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1898 and assisted Vladimir Lenin in leading the October Revolution. During the Russian Civil War (1918–1920), he served as a member of the Council of Workers' and Peasants' Defence. In April 1922, he was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (bolsheviks) at the 11th Party Congress; following Lenin's death in January 1924, Stalin gradually rose to become the paramount leader of the Soviet Union's party and state. In 1941, he concurrently assumed the chairmanship of the Council of People's Commissars of the Soviet Union. He passed away on 5 March 1953 in Moscow from a cerebral hemorrhage, at the age of 74. His collected works are published as The Stalin Complete Works.
