Pixiu (pí xiū), also known as "Pixie," "Tianlu," and "Baijie," commonly called "the great tiger," is a ferocious mythical beast described in ancient Chinese books and folklore. Along with the dragon, phoenix, tortoise, and qilin, it is considered one of the five great auspicious beasts. [8]
According to the "Records of the Grand Historian·Five Emperors' Chronicles," the Pixiu was a fierce beast trained by the Yellow Emperor. [12] The "Qingbai Leichao·Animals·Pixiu" describes the Pixiu's appearance as similar to a tiger or bear, with grayish-white fur. It has the body of a tiger or leopard, a head and tail resembling a dragon, and a color that is both golden and jade-like. It has a pair of wings on its shoulders but cannot spread them, and has a single horn that curves backward. In ancient times, Pixiu were depicted with either one or two horns; one horn was called "Tianlu," and two horns were called "Pixie." Most depictions of the Pixiu show it with a single horn. [1]
