Description

Featuring funnels, hypnotic wheels, flip-flops, and waves, these marble run pieces allow for endless creativity on a fridge, white board, or other magnetic surface. After publishing the motorized magnetic marble lift that uses the marble run 003 hardware parts, I've been in pursuit of compatible marble run pieces that would allow the lift to run unattended for several minutes without dropping marbles. These parts fill that requirement with higher side walls and carefully constrained marble paths, while still being compatible with the marvelous magnetic marble run by user waveman and the MEGA PACK (requires modified base pin) by user Trinkify3d.

All you need to get started is ½" magnetic tape ($5 online) and some 14-16mm marbles. I recommend applying a thin coating of rubber cement (or plasti-dip) to the back of the magnets to keep pieces from sliding around. This step is critical on fridges and whiteboards.

Update 01Jan2025: Print profiles have been added for parts that use 10x2mm magnets instead of the magnetic sticker tape. Rubber cement is still strongly recommended for adding grip to the back of pieces.

A list of included pieces:

The Vortex

This funnel uses a gravity-well curve to spin marbles faster as they fall

The Elipsoid
Marbles spin slower as they get closer to the center

The Wheel

Drop marbles from the top or the sides

The Flip-Flop

Split the flow of marbles equally into two paths

The Wave

Slow down marbles with a longer path

The Curve

Turn vertical speed into horizontal speed

The Drop

Stop marbles before dropping to the next level

The Reinforcement

Add grip to pieces that might slide around, especially behind drops and beneath pieces that will have marbles dropping straight down onto them

The Straight

The most basic of marble run pieces. Comes in multiple sizes.

Amazing design, I love the fact that it's a complete set of many different parts that allow for endless creativity. Printed the 10mm magnets version and I've super-glued the magnets in place. Even the big pieces hold well on a fridge with the provided number of magnet slots. The only thing I was missing is a catcher tray since I don't plan on using the automatic lift, so I designed and printed my own, using similar style to the rest of the set. Last note (issue with my cheap filament) - when printing using the provided plates layout, pieces closest to the edge of the plate kept peeling off. I've split the print into 4 plates to space out the print more and all was good. Thanks for such a great model!

Thanks for the boost and for sharing a picture! Can I ask what printer you used? If pieces are peeling up at the edges, I may bump the bed temperature slightly in the print profile.

I've got the A1. I suspect the pieces are also placed too close to the edge in the profile, but I didn't troubleshoot it beyond splitting the plates. And as I mentioned I'm using a cheap off-brand filament and no drier, so I'm not blaming the print profile at all.

Hello, was there something that went wrong with this print profile?

Nothing major, I had to change orientation on the big funnel and print on 4 plates instead of 2 on my P1S.

Why change the orientation?

The printing of the deep funnel always failed at the same spot on my A1 (see picture). The printer knocked the model off the plate. Tried different PLAs

Sorry you are having issues. That is an impressively consistent failure. Here are some things I would try: Clean the print bed with hot water, dish soap, and a mildly abrasive sponge. Add a brim to the deep funnel with settings from the attached picture Set the printer to "silent mode" to lower print speed. If none of that works, raise the bed temp by 5 degrees. Let me know if any of those changes fix the problem and I will update the print profile.

That is the magnetic marble lift which uses the TT motor from the marble run 003 kit. https://makerworld.com/en/models/422922

How do you get the magnetic sticker tape to stick to the PLA? I'm not having any success, so far.... :(

What kind of magnetic tape did you get? The adhesive backing worked fine for me. You could also tack down the edges with some super glue.

First try was from the craft section of Walmart. It works great on paper, but it doesn't want to bond with the plastic. I've ordered some different stuff with 3M adhesive. If that doesn't work, I'll try superglue. Thanks!
