Description
This design adapts to a readily available expansion dock PCB featuring a 2464 controller, devoid of an enclosure. The board incorporates an NVMe slot, allowing users to connect various PCIe devices—such as graphics cards, sound cards, or network interface cards—via NVMe-to-PCIe cables or PCBs, depending on individual needs. Note that the NVMe interface provides only 3V power by default. If your PCIe device requires 5V or 12V, you must supply additional power to the PCIe adapter board; otherwise, operation may be unstable or fail altogether.

For this project, I needed a 10 Gigabit Ethernet card compatible with a Mac mini. Consequently, this model specifically accommodates the single-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet card from Dawn I used, which does not require external power.
Regarding the 2464 controller specifications: The ASM2464 controller is a USB 4.0 controller, though compatible with Thunderbolt 4 (lacking features such as dynamic bandwidth allocation, but otherwise largely similar). It achieves speeds up to 40Gbps and offers backward compatibility with USB 2.0/3.0/3.1/3.2.
This bridge chip is only compatible with Apple's M-series processors, Intel 12th-generation Core and later, and AMD Zen 3 and later chipsets.
Required Components:
Electronics
1. 2464 controller expansion dock PCB, approximately $20 (available on various online marketplaces, and images are also available on the MakerWorld website)
2. Dawn single-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet card (available on various online marketplaces, often refurbished)
3. M.2 to 4x PCIe cable, 10cm, 1 piece (available on various online marketplaces, and links are also available on the MakerWorld website)
4. Two 3cm x 3cm x 0.7cm quiet 5V fans (optional; requires soldering to the 5V pins on the USB port)
Hardware
1. Twelve M2 countersunk screws, M2x8MM (four for securing the board to the enclosure, eight for fastening the front and rear panels)
2. Eight M2 heat-set standoffs, M2 3x3.2 (for fastening the front and rear panels; alternatively, these can be omitted, mounting directly to the frame)
3. Screws for fastening the fans; M3 screws are suitable for 3cm fans (not essential, as fans may simply clip into place)
