UPDATE:
Due to testing in competition, we've found that the intake rollers are not as effective as we thought. The issue was related to the narrow angle of attack (or whatever you want to call it) which was caused by the sheer width of the intake rollers. To mitigate this issue (and the burning hole GoBilda would cause in your grant buckets), they have been replaced by a “finger” style design (below). These have been spaced in such a way that will grab the sample from many more angles and height situations. Updates to the BOM are simply two short button head screws (or socket, should you run it without the insert which restores the tip of one spike), and two heat set inserts (same as all the others).

A 4-bar intake for the First Tech Challenge 2024-2025 Season: Into The Deep.
This intake has 83mm of extension and grabs a sample perfectly, allowing horizontal extension into the Submersible, and simple deployment of the claw, grabbing samples. It also works on specimens. Powered by a GoBilda Torque servo, it features reliable and strong actuation.
Printing:
- 0.2mm layer height
- 0.4mm line width
- 30% or more gyroid infill
- At least 3 wall loops
- No supports
- Brim (not required, but recommended)
This design requires non-printable parts, found below at Maker's Supply as well as other sources (Amazon)
Tools required:
- 3mm hex allen key or screwdriver
- Soldering iron (for heat set inserts)
Other details:
- 113 degree range of motion for the servo
- Mounting is at the rear, and bolts to the inside of a full size GoBilda U Channel (can you tell we like GoBilda?)
