Parametric Grid Generator

I wanted to learn more about openscad, so I started with this as one of my first projects…..Initially designed for an emersed aquarium plant project I'm working on, I decided to share my openscad code so folks can make any size/dimension of grid they need for whatever purpose they may need it for.

Parameters:

Pegs:

  • Enable Pegs: Yes/No
  • Peg Diameter
  • Peg Height - How short or tall you want the support pegs to be (not related to grid height or line thickness)
  • Support Peg Threshold Width - Adds side support pegs if width exceeds this width
  • Support Peg Threshold Length - Adds middle support pegs if width exceeds this length

Dimensions:

  • Grid Width
  • Grid Length
  • Grid Height - Height of grid lines
  • Grid Spacing - Spacing between grid lines
  • Line Thickness - How thick you want the actual grid lines

Some projects I'm using this solution for:

Plant risers (makerworld link TBD):

  • The grids will allow the stem plants to sit in (but not completely submerged) the solution to grow roots and have something to attach to once the plants upright themselves.

Open Air Aquarium Lids (makerworld link TBD):

  • Allows for open air to pass through to allow for gas exchange for growing floating plants (which don't do well in sealed glass/plastic lids due to the high humidity.

Aquarium bottom reinforcement (makerworld link TBD):

  • When aqua scaping an aquarium sometimes adding “egg crate” grids are used to add more support for heavy rocks and other objects. I'm planning on printing some grids that are super thick and in TPU for a few upcoming aquarium projects where additional support is needed.

Aquatic plant/coral frag riser (makerworld link TBD):

Updates:

  • December 5th, 2024 - V1.0.1 - Fixed issue where grid wasn't uniform when creating grids with odd sizes or grid densities.
  • December 2nd, 2024 - V1
    • Initial Release

Known bugs/issues:

  • FIXED: Depending on the grid size you select some of the grid cutouts may not be uniform, that will be addressed in a later update.

Future plans (will be updated as more suggestions/ideas come to light):

  • Add ability to select/change the shape of the grid beyond rectangles
  • Add functionality for connectors to lock grids together
  • Add “Snap-ins” to connect grids on top of one another

Would love a version of this (or an option in the customizer) where the pegs are flush with the sides! I'm looking into making a grid that fits snugly in the bottom of my tanks for egg-laying fish like barbs to drop eggs and have the eggs fall through to the bottom where they can't eat them. I'm afraid the pegs sticking out rather being flush will let fish squeeze down through the sides.

hey Julian! let me look at the code this weekend! I have the exact use case but haven’t got my lab rebuilt to test the current iteration. I’m planning on using them for rainbow shiners and odessas! what size tanks are you spawning them in? I primarily do 10-20s!

Awesome, thank you! Nice, I'm doing odessa barbs too! I have some 3D printed grids in there right now, but not the full bottom of the tank, so not optimal and it would be nice to have it higher off the bottom (so I would make some taller pegs, like 30mm?) I mainly use 10g and 20g highs at the moment!

Adding it to my list! All good feedback! Appreciate you taking the time to provide it! Changing the pegs to be flush shouldn’t be too bad, and updating the peg length constraint is straight forward!

The idea is very nice. I wanted to print a bunch of these grids for my growtent so that my tropical plants don't sit in excess water. For that I would need much more pegs under the grid for stability reasons. Do you think you could more pegs to it all through the grid?

Absolutely! sounds like you need more leg density to just keep everything from flexing? Definitely a better option than trying to add thickness to the grid or make it more dense! Let me see if I can whip up some code changes this week to fit what you need.

Yeah it bends directly down as soon as I put pots on it. I don't know if printing with pla would maybe solve the problem but with pla and high light and humidity levels I'm concerned that it won't last very long

And thanks for looking into it. If it's possible, can you make the legs maybe 1cm longer?

Prints and works great and was able to get some changes made by giving feedback about my specific needs. Really dig the ease of the parametric generator and how many parameters can be set.

if you open up the customize tab you can see it’s in mm. I’ll update the description too. Thanks!
