Description

Issue:

Many JBL 44'xx and XPL speaker models suffer from broken plastic pegs on their grills. Common fixes such as re-gluing the original peg or using Velcro often fall short due to either weak adhesion or less aesthetic results.

Solution:

A custom-designed, 3D-printed replacement peg with a stronger structural connection can provide a more durable fix. This solution involves drilling into the original frame to create a robust attachment point for the peg, which is then glued in place.

Steps to Fix:

  1. Prepare the Grill Surface:
    Use a Dremel or similar tool to smooth and even out the broken peg's surface. This ensures a flat base for drilling and gluing the replacement peg.
  2. Print or Order the Peg Model:
    • Download the 3D model (to be uploaded on the MakerWorld account after adjustments).
    • Print the model using a 3D printer or an online printing service. The design is optimized for a 4.5 mm hole in the frame.
    • Recommended Material: ASA CF filament was used for testing, but other filaments may work as well. Ensure dimensional accuracy for a proper fit.
  3. Drill the Hole:
    Drill a 4.5 mm hole into the grill frame where the original peg was located. This creates a socket for the replacement peg's stud, increasing the glue's strength and overall durability.
  4. Attach the Replacement Peg:
    Apply superglue to the stud and secure it into the drilled hole. Allow sufficient drying time before handling the grill.

Consumables and Tools:

  • Dremel (or similar): For surface preparation.
  • 3D Printer: For creating the replacement peg (ASA CF filament recommended). Alternatively, use an online 3D printing service.
  • Glue: Superglue or another strong adhesive.
  • Drill: A 4.5 mm drill bit matches the peg's design.

This method requires more effort than traditional fixes, but the result is a much stronger, long-lasting repair. The updated 3D model will be available for download after fine-tuning for better accuracy.
