Description

Hive: Space Edition – Rules Overview

Hive: Space Edition is a two-player abstract strategy game. Each player controls a set of hexagonal tiles representing different space-themed elements. The goal of the game is to completely surround your opponent's Planet tile, using both your own tiles and those of your opponent.

Game Setup

  • The game does not require a board; tiles are placed directly on a flat surface.
  • Players alternate placing one tile at a time to build the "Hive."
  • A tile must be placed adjacent to at least one of your own tiles and cannot break the Hive into separate groups.

Objective

Surround your opponent’s Planet tile completely on all six sides. Tiles from either player can contribute to this.

Tile Types and Their Movements

Each space element has unique movement rules. Here’s how they work:

  1. Planet (Queen Bee)

    • Represents the queen bee in the original game.
    • Movement: The Planet can move one space at a time in any direction as long as the Hive remains connected.
    • Rules: You must place your Planet tile on the board within the first four turns.
  2. Spaceship (Ant)

    • Represents the ant in the original game.
    • Movement: The Spaceship can move any number of spaces around the perimeter of the Hive.
    • Rules: This is the most versatile piece for mobility and positioning.
  3. Lunar Module (Grasshopper)

    • Represents the grasshopper in the original game.
    • Movement: The Lunar Module jumps over one or more connected tiles in a straight line and lands on the first empty space.
    • Rules: It cannot land on occupied spaces or move diagonally.
  4. Space Station (Spider)

    • Represents the spider in the original game.
    • Movement: The Space Station moves exactly three spaces, crawling around the perimeter of the Hive.
    • Rules: It cannot backtrack or split the Hive during movement.
  5. UFO (Beetle)

    • Represents the beetle in the original game.
    • Movement: The UFO moves one space at a time in any direction.
    • Special Ability: The UFO can climb on top of another tile, effectively immobilizing the piece underneath it. While on top, the UFO counts as part of the Hive.
    • Rules: Only one tile can occupy the top layer of a stack.

General Rules

  • Hive Integrity: The Hive must remain connected as a single group at all times.
  • Placement: Tiles must be placed adjacent to your own pieces during placement and cannot directly touch your opponent's tiles.
  • No Blocking: Pieces can only move if their movement does not break the Hive into separate groups.
