What’s New?
• Single-Piece Roller Body: The redesigned roller is now a single, solid piece that ensures durability and effortless printing on most 3D printers with a 250mm print bed. No seams, no fuss.
• All Bearings in the Handles: By housing all bearings in the handles, the Crust Crusader provides smoother, more balanced rolling action. This design mirrors the functionality of a differential, ensuring even pressure and precise control as you roll.
• Compact Yet Powerful: With a total length of 430mm (including handles) and a maximum roller diameter of 75mm, this rolling pin strikes the perfect balance between manageability and performance. It’s sturdy enough for any dough while still being comfortable to handle.
• Filament and Waste Optimization: The updated design features the logo inscribed on just one side of the roller, saving material and print time. Additionally, the cupcake icon has been replaced with a pie to celebrate its refined focus on versatility.

Precision Construction
• Threaded Rod Core: At its core is a fully threaded M8 x 400mm rod (real-world length: ~402mm), providing structural stability. This rod is easily secured within the roller using acorn nuts and washers for a snug fit.
• Advanced Bearings: Four 608 2RS ball bearings (two per handle) ensure smooth, controlled rolling action.
• Ergonomic Handles: The tapered handles naturally guide your thumbs into an ideal position for maximum comfort and precision.
• Gentle Roller Slope: The roller’s gradual slope enhances control for pressing out dough evenly, making it perfect for crusts, pastries, and more.
Hardware Needed
To bring the Crust Crusader Rolling Pin to life, you’ll need a few hardware components. Here’s a complete list with links for easy purchasing:
• One Threaded Rod: Fully Threaded M8 x 400mm 1.25mm Thread Pitch, stainless steel (~402mm in reality). Buy it here
• Two Acorn Nuts: M8-1.25mm Acorn Cap Nuts, Stainless Steel Hex Cap Dome Head Nuts. Buy them here
• Two Nuts: M8 x 1.25mm Serrated Flange Hex Lock Nuts. I purchased these with the washers together.
• Eight Washers: Standard M8 Steel Washers. I purchased these with the nuts together.
• Four Bearings: 608 2RS Ball Bearings. Buy them here
These components ensure a precise fit and seamless rolling experience. They’re easy to find and affordable, making this design accessible to 3D printing enthusiasts everywhere.
Assembly Made Simple
No glue? No problem. Here’s how to put it all together:
1. Print All Parts: Print the roller, inside handle parts, and outside handle parts using the provided print profiles. Remember, the Handles print will pause during the inside handle parts to allow you to insert the 608 bearings.
2. Assemble the Roller Body: Slide the rod through the roller body, securing it tightly between two nuts with wrenches. Center the body precisely using a measuring tape.
3. Attach Inside Handle Parts:
• Slide three washers onto one end of the rod, then fit the inside handle part over them.
• Add one washer and the acorn nut, then hand-tighten. Repeat on the other side.
• Ensure smooth spinning of the inside handle parts; adjust the body or washers if needed.
4. Attach Outside Handle Parts: Hand-tighten the outside handle parts onto the inner handles.

Designed for Easy Printing
The Crust Crusader was designed with 3D printing in mind:
• Print Bed Requirements: The roller requires a print bed with at least 250mm in height.
• Scarf Seam Configuration: Thanks to Bambu Lab Studio’s 1.10 version, the seams are flush and clean, eliminating the need for sanding (though the six-layer wall thickness makes sanding an option if desired).
• No Glue Needed: The threaded connections ensure a secure fit while allowing for future disassembly if needed.
Food-Safe Materials and Care
I recommend printing the Crust Crusader with food-safe filaments like PLA or PETG. Avoid filaments like ABS or PC, which may contain toxins. For tips on food-safe 3D printing, check out this video resource.
After printing, wash the roller by hand with soap and water—no dishwasher or microwave, please.
Effortless Finishing
While sanding isn’t necessary with the updated design, those seeking a perfectly smooth finish can do so easily:
1. Sand lightly with 120 and 220 grit sandpaper.
2. Clean thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust.
3. Apply a light coat of Butcher Block Conditioner for a polished, food-safe surface.
Inspiration
This rolling pin was designed from my own dimensions and custom measurements, but was inspired by 6 different rolling pins I researched, currently on the market right, and sold at high-end cooking and baking supply stores, as well as the advice I've received from a friend that does a lot of baking. I recently was introduced to an amazing rolling pin called The Rolling Wonder, that's built with high precision and detail, and made of wood (which is more ideal). It's a bit pricey but you're paying for high quality. This could be a really great gift if you're looking for a high quality rolling pin for that special baker in your life. You can check out their product here: https://rolling-wonder.com.
Tools Needed
• Two basic wrenches
• A precise measuring tape (metric works better but isn’t necessary)
The Perfect Gift
Looking for the ideal gift for a baker or chef? The Crust Crusader is both functional and stylish, making it a standout addition to any kitchen. It’s a thoughtful choice for holidays, birthdays, or any occasion that celebrates creativity in the kitchen.
Let me know in the comments how it comes together, I'm always curious to see where I can make improvements.
