Encyclopedia Introduction:
Uranium is the element with the atomic number 92, its symbol is U, and it is the heaviest naturally occurring element found in nature. There are three isotopes that occur naturally, all of which are radioactive and have very long half-lives (hundreds of thousands of years to 4.5 billion years). In addition, there are 12 artificial isotopes (226U~240U). Uranium was discovered by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in 1789. Uranium compounds were used early on for ceramic coloration, and after the discovery of the phenomenon of nuclear fission, it has been used as a nuclear fuel.
