This is a beatiful and useful hinged box which prints in place. You can add four circular magnets (6mm width / 3mm height) to the print for the box to have a snappy closing mechanism. I added .stl files which do not require magnets and also a .stl file with no decor which provides for flat surfaces all around the box. You can set a separate color for the latch in your slicer if you like. In the images provided, I printed the box in black PLA with the latch in copper PLA.

 

Important note regarding the magnets:

Do not just push the magnets randomly into the print. Start with the magnets for the lid, then place magnets on top of the magnets just placed into the lid. Mark the back of the added magnets with a pen and push the marked magnets into the body of the box - with the marked sides of the magnets facing towards the box! 

 

Dimensions:

  • Length: ca. 160mm
  • Width: ca. 120mm
  • Height: ca. 50mm

Print time seems long, but the result is worth it - the box looks very fancy in real life!

 

Tested and working settings on a X1 Carbon:

  • PLA
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • Supports (Auto), but just on the build plate as per .3mf file - this will create a small support structure around the hinges
  • Smooth print plate

 

Hint: Turn off / remove the prime tower in case you do a single color print.

 

You can add self-adhesive silicon feet to the bottom of the print if you like.
