The Solar Orrery is an advanced 3D-printed model that brings the solar system to life in stunning mechanical detail. Designed for those with a passion for intricate models and mechanical systems, this orrery allows you to observe and appreciate the motion of the planets, accurately timed in relation to Earth.

This model features the planets from Mercury to Saturn, each one connected by an intricate system of gears and rods that allow them to rotate around the sun in perfect synchronization. The gears are meticulously designed to mesh together, ensuring that each planet moves at the correct speed, relative to Earth’s orbit. Saturn’s iconic rings are included, giving the planet an added level of realism.

The assembly of the Solar Orrery is a highly detailed process that requires a significant amount of skill and precision. The kit includes 3D printed parts that need to be cleaned, prepared, and assembled with great care. In addition to the 3D printed components, you will need to gather some additional tools and materials, such as M3 heat press inserts, bearings, rods, screws, thread locker, glue, and a 28BYJ-48 stepper motor.

Key challenges include correctly assembling the gears, ensuring smooth planetary rotations, and aligning the planets and their corresponding arms in the correct order. Special care must be taken when attaching the planets, as some require threading screws through their base and gluing the top halves into place. The Earth’s assembly is slightly different, requiring a rotation gear that allows it to spin independently.

This model is not for beginners. It requires patience, attention to detail, and mechanical know-how to bring it all together. However, once completed, the Solar Orrery stands as an impressive display piece that showcases the beauty of our solar system in motion, and a true testament to your craftsmanship.

The latest update to the orrery design introduces a sleek, integrated enclosure for the electronics, elevating both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. This enclosure houses the Arduino UNO and stepper driver securely, offering protection and a cleaner look while keeping all wiring neatly contained. The Arduino ports align perfectly with designated openings on the enclosure’s flat surface, allowing easy access to USB connections without disrupting the setup. The enclosure also features heat press inserts to mount the electronics securely inside, ensuring stable and efficient performance during operation. Finally, the enclosure attaches to the orrery’s base with sturdy M3 screws, creating a unified structure that enhances both durability and user experience. This addition makes the orrery more refined, professional, and ready for display or educational use.

😂 it’s not exactly something we come across day to day. but it’s the name of a clockwork model of the solar system or just the sun, earth and the moon

Thankyou! it’s been an ongoing project. MK1 was about 3 times as big was tricky shrinking it down and keeping the tolerances
