20MW combustion engine with generator scale 1:120

This model is based on the CATERPILLAR 20-cylinder gas engine G20CM34. Coupled with a generator (likely Leroy-Somer or ABB), it sits on a base frame. These engines powered vessels in the AIDA series and also served power plants with a total output reaching 250MW.

The original configuration delivered 20MW of electrical power at approximately 36kV. Each 340mm diameter cylinder generated 1MW mechanically. The operational speed was either 500 RPM (50Hz) or 750 RPM (60Hz).

These engines operated on natural gas (LNG) but could also utilize propane/methane as alternative fuels.

In late 2022, CATERPILLAR ceased production of these medium-speed marine diesel and gas engines in Europe, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs across development, assembly, and supplier companies, including foundries.

I designed this model for TT gauge (1:120 scale) model railways. It can be rescaled for other gauges.

CATERPILLAR completely stopped building these engines (medium-speed marine diesel and gas engines) in Europe at the end of 2022, thereby eliminating thousands of jobs in development, assembly and at suppliers such as foundries. I created the model for model railways, here the gauge is TT 1:120. It can be re-scaled to fit other tracks.
