The bronze mirror is 22.7 centimeters in diameter and 0.6 centimeters thick. A slightly smaller acrylic circular mirror can be attached to the back.
The Four Luan Birds Holding Ribbons Pattern in Gold and Silver Inlay Mirror is inspired by a prop from the TV series "Tang Dynasty Strange Events: The Journey to the West," specifically the death of the coroner. The real-life inspiration is a Tang Dynasty collection at the Shaanxi History Museum.
"The wedding mirror still remains, with golden engravings of two phoenixes on its back."
The "Four Luan Birds Holding Ribbons Pattern in Gold and Silver Inlay Mirror" from the Tang Dynasty, unearthed in 1956 in Han Senzhai, Xi'an City, is now housed in the Shaanxi History Museum.
Measuring 22.7 centimeters in diameter, the mirror is circular with a round knob in the center of the back. The knob is surrounded by concentric circles of gold thread, creating a simple border. A circle of silver leaf shaped like flower petals is affixed to the outside of the knob. The main pattern on the back of the mirror features four Luan birds, each holding a ribbon, flying counter-clockwise. The gold pieces are cut and pasted together, creating a dazzling display of golden and silver accents against the black plain body.
Luan birds have always been considered auspicious birds that bring happiness, and the "Shou" in "Shoudai" (ribbon) sounds like the character for "longevity," signifying long life. The "Luan Birds Holding Ribbons" motif embodies happiness and longevity, while the surrounding "concentric circles" symbolize love. Thisbronze mirrorexpresses people's aspirations for a beautiful life and their good wishes.
