Pull-String Top

This is a convenient and easy-to-print top toy that is driven by a gear rack and pinion, making it very entertaining.

Refer to the animated GIF in the model photos for assembly instructions.

When installing the top onto the launcher, do not apply excessive force, do not apply excessive force, do not apply excessive force, and do not insert it all the way in. The top should remain secure without falling.

Update on 11.20:

Several challenges were encountered during the model design process:

Initially, I intended to design the outer ring as a planetary gear. When the top rotates, the planetary gear would both revolve and rotate. However, due to some physical factors (which I am not entirely clear on), this structure could not spin.

The second design incorporated bearings, but it overlooked friction and inertia. The weight of the inner bearing ring was simply too small compared to the total weight of the object, resulting in negligible inertia, preventing it from spinning.

The third design encountered numerous issues, including but not limited to: an uncomfortable grip on the launcher, a wobbly pull-string, the top easily detaching from the launcher, and some parts requiring an interference fit. Most printers exhibit slight variations in precision. If it is too tight, it cannot be inserted; if it is too loose, it becomes ineffective...

Interference fit location:

Ultimately, it was decided to simplify the design. Let's get it launched first. This version of the top was designed.

The top's height was reduced, shifting its center of gravity downward, resulting in more stable rotation.

The launcher was redesigned, making it compact and convenient.

Designing is not easy. If you also like this model, please give it a thumbs up or support me. Thank you for your recognition and support!

Good toy. Printed in two plates because of plastic problems.

This works pretty great! These are the only 2 recommendations I would make: (1) making the spinning top a little shallower in design, and shifting more of its weight towards the outside edge would greatly increase stability and spin-time. (2) the prongs can be a bit finicky — pressed on too tightly, the top will never come off. But putting it on too lightly means it could fall off early and lose spin-time. Copying something like what Beyblades does with its hook style prongs would likely work best, if possible. overall this is still pretty great though, and my coworker has been having a lot of fun spinning it during virtual meetings :)
