Summary

This is a 1:1 life-sized model of the massive 30mm Discarding Sabot round used by the GAU-8 Gatling Autocannon – the same gun used in the legendary A-10 Warthog. Sabot refers to a projectile (usually looks like a dart with fins) that is “packaged” within a canister so that it can be fired from a conventional barrel. In the modern era, sabot weapons are most typically associated with having very high armor piercing potential, so they tend to be used against armored targets. The M-1 Abrams and other tanks also often use Sabot round when firing at enemy armor, for instance.

This model is just two parts, so its very easy to assemble. For those that know my previous A-10 30mm models, this model is interchangable with my previous A-10 30mm round models. This model includes an improved base with more polygons for a richer look and feel and it has some minor adjustments to the dimensions for more realism.

If you would like to see a cut-away version of this sabot round with a removeable dart, let me know in the comments.

Bambu filaments used were:

  • Iron Metal Black for most of the sabot top
  • Silk Silver for the bottom of the sabot tip
  • Sunlu Silk Black for the tip (bambu doesn't make a black silk)
  • Basic Light Gray for the segments in the sabot top
  • For the base, you can use a variety of filaments since unfortunately I've never found a true match for the real 30mm, so the closest filaments are:
    • Metal Iridium Gold (shown in the photos)
    • Metal Copper
    • Metal Iron Black
    • Note: the color in the print file for the base is as close as I could get to the real 30mm base (basically its a super dark gold nearly black), so use that to find the best filament match you have.
  • The little ring on the base is Silk White

If you enjoy my work and would like to help support my ability to share more (and even better) models in the future, please consider boosting or buying me a coffee at the link below.   Your support is what helps me have enough filament and supplies to do all the print testing required for my models to be high quality and easy to assemble.  It takes a mountain of test prints for each model. Thanks :-)
