Looking for a better place to store your key than under the doormat? Hide your keys in plain site with this realistic rock model, featuring a recess and cover allowing you to store a key inside.

Also useful if you’re travelling and staying at an apartment, AirBnb or condo where they only have a single key.

You can either leave the rock as a single colour print, or paint to give it a more realistic effect, as shown in the pictures. An outdoor rated filament is recommended.

Turned out great after a little paint (black, grey, brown, green followed by sanding so the edges stand out, colors match their surrounding), I did file one side of the bottom clip so it's easier to get a finger under and open the bottom.

Wow, your painting looks amazing, very realistic. I am wondering if you have any advice for achieving this effect or painting related resources to look into?

Honestly I have no clue how to paint, but I do know graphic design and art direction, what I did was give it a layer of grey primer, I used cheap little tube paints from the dollar store, i did a rough brush of black and mixed in brown for a dark brown in the crevices and dry brushed as much as i could off so that it was just in the crevices, then i mixed some browns and greens and very lightly dry brushed them in random spots i tried to imagine what a rock outside would look like.

... some grey some brown from dirt some green for moss like growth, very lightly dry brushed it all in there and going over it again and again wiping it away brushing wiping etc. my last step was to make the edge stand out so i hit it lightly with some sand paper to help define the edges and lines, nature isn't perfect so don't try to make it perfect :D

wonderful. printed with eSun PLA Clay. it seems a real rock 😊 I made sone modifications to the profile. I prefer to use adaptive layers and I added I am modifier in order to increase the filling on the bottom of the object and using lightning filling for the rest of the object

Hi. Lightning infill (I mistyped) is an infill type which can save material and printing time. It is extremely sparse: https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/support You can set a lightning infill percentage of 70-80% and the slicer will place the infill only when needed. It can be used on particular objects and geometry.

I'm not 100% convinced that fuzzy skin is needed, but the extra strength is great. Primed black, drybrushed dark to light, sponged the edges light gray. Sealed with watered down Modge Podge.

Oh wow it's great looking, fuzzy skin can be great, it depends on the real rocks at your place. at my place it blends in perfectly without paint :-)
