Background

I wanted to experiment with “live hinges” with PLA, which resulted in a print-in-place fiddle toy that has kept me entertained for hours!

Instructions

  • Print in standard PLA
  • The live hinge is surprisingly resilient, however, it is essential to print with the included profile for it to work.
  • If for some reason you can't make sure to use 0.1mm layer height and set the infill and bridge angle to 45 degrees.
  • Wait until the plate is code before you take it off - bending the joints while they are hot drastically reduces their life
  • When you first take it off the plate gently bend each hinge in the obvious direction to loosen it up.

***DO NOT print in PLA+ - I've noticed PLA+ joints last about 5 bends whereas regular PLA will last hundreds…

Repair

  • The joints won't last forever, but when they do break you are left with a new and different fiddle toy that's just as much fun.
  • Or alternatively, you can repair it with the “repair patches” which are in the profile on a separate place -
    • these can be stuck on broken joints using some CA to prolong the enjoyment!
