Description
I've loved rotaries since a college roommate introduced me to them. I found a modeling tutorial from SOLIDWORKS and made a simplified version to speed up the process and be able to see the rotor motion, and then I eventually printed off the parts and pieces for it. As far as I'm aware, it's 1:1 scale of the rotaries Mazda put in their RX-7s and RX-8s. I was delighted that by cutting it in half, I wouldn't have to scale it down.
It's meant to come apart, so I am using magnets to hold it together. The green alignment pins are a nod to the cooling jackets that I didn't include.
The ring gear and rotor are keyed such that they don't slip and only fit properly in one orientation, and held together with magnets.
The model has been sitting on my shelf, and I have a plan to build a cam-driven circuit that will light the LEDs at the proper position as a motor turns the shaft, but that part has been put on the back burner. I think they are 10mm diffused LED bulbs.
I was in a pinch, so I had to use aluminum foil for wires. I know, I took electronics for engineers and should know better.
