Multilingual 'Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys' Double Sided Coaster Collection
Add a touch of global wisdom to your space with this unique set of double-sided drink coasters. Each coaster features a woodcut-style design measuring 100 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick. One side displays a circus tent with the words "Not My Circus," while the other showcases two monkeys facing each other with the words "Not My Monkeys." This iconic saying has been translated into 11 languages, offering a diverse collection that resonates worldwide. But don't become too attached to these coasters—remember, this is not your circus and these are not your monkeys.
The Journey Behind the Collection
What began as a simple idea for a pocket-sized coin featuring the saying 'Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys' soon evolved into a much larger project. To create a coin, I needed separate artworks for each side—I decided to have one side depicting a circus tent with the words 'Not My Circus,' and the other showing two monkeys with the words 'Not My Monkeys.' Someone suggested including the original Polish version of the saying, which inspired me to translate it into other languages. This led to an extensive project resulting in 22 designs across 11 languages, including German, Czech, Spanish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Slovak, Russian, Serbian, and Lithuanian. In the end, I decided not to release the coin version for now, as I'm still refining the print profile to improve the bed-side quality. However, the design works great as a coaster or in larger print sizes.
Printing Tips and Recommendations
- Color Selection: For the best visual contrast, choose a dark color for the black areas and a light color for the white areas. Avoid inverting the colors to maintain the design's integrity.
- Print Orientation: Decide which side you prefer facing up during printing. The top surface generally offers more detail, while the bottom surface appears smoother.
- Scaling Down: I'm not providing a coin-sized version at the moment. While the top side prints well with a 0.4 mm nozzle, I'm not satisfied with the bed side. If you'd like to try a coin-sized, portable version, you can scale it down to 42x42x3 mm and use the same printer profile settings as the coaster. A 0.2 mm nozzle might produce better results for the smaller size.
- Materials Used: Example prints were made using Bambu Lab Matte Charcoal (11101) and Matte Ivory White (11100) filaments.
- Finishing Touch: After printing, gently rub the top faces of two coasters together. This will smooth out minor imperfections, making the top surface smoother.
