Mangala An Ancient Strategy Game from Central Asia
Mangala is a traditional logic game that originated in Central Asia and was first played by the Turks. Over time, it has evolved into an important part of Anatolian culture. Mangala is often depicted in miniatures from the Ottoman period and was originally played with seeds instead of stones. In Germany, they are referred to as bean games
The Mangala Game Board: Symbolism and Meaning
The Mangala game board is more than just a simple playing surface, it is rich in symbolism. The 12 depressions on the board represent the 12 months of the year, while the 4 stones in each depression represent the 4 weeks of a month. The two larger depressions, the treasure chambers, stand for the East and West. Thus, Mangala is also played with a deeper cultural context
Why is Mangala So Important
The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism emphasizes the importance of this game for the preservation of Anatolian culture. Passing on this traditional game from generation to generation is an important step to keep the cultural heritage alive and make Turkish culture better known worldwide
How to Play Mangala
At the start, each player receives 24 stones/beans. The game board has 12 depressions, of which each player controls 6 on their side. Each depression is filled with 4 stones. In addition to the 6 depressions, each player has a large depression, called the treasure chamber. The goal of the game is to collect as many stones as possible in one's own treasure chamber. The player's treasure chamber is located to their right
The gameplay is simple: First, it is decided by drawing lots which player starts. The game ends as soon as one player has no more stones on their side. This player then takes the remaining stones on the opponent's side into their treasure chamber. After all stones have been counted, the player with the most stones receives one point. A draw leads to a point split. The player who has collected the most points after five rounds wins

Rules of the Mangala Game
- Players may only take stones/beans from their own depressions
- The stones can be placed into one's own depressions as well as the opponent's
- A player chooses one of the depressions on their side and distributes the stones one by one counter-clockwise
- If the move ends in one's own treasure chamber, the player may continue directly
- If the last stone lands in one's own empty field, all stones from the opposite depression, together with the last stone, may be placed into the treasure chamber
The player who collects the most stones in their treasure chamber wins the round
Tips for a Successful Mangala Game
A good start is crucial: Try to place the last stone of your move into your own treasure chamber to be allowed to make another move immediately. If the opponent places a stone in a depression with an odd number of stones, take the opportunity to move all stones from that depression into your treasure chamber
Make sure your last stone falls into an empty field on your side, this allows you to place the stones from the opposite depression into your treasure chamber. The right strategy can make all the difference here
Interesting Facts About Mangala
Did you know that the first move in a Mangala game often determines the course of the game? A popular opening move is taking stones from the third depression on one's own side. This move can often lead to the last stone landing in one's own treasure chamber and the player immediately getting another move
