The term "Fuk Xiang" (福象), which means a "lucky appearance", originates from the Song Dynasty. In the ninth volume of Sima Guang's "Records of the Stream of Water", it states: "This child is plump and has a lucky appearance. Keep him in the palace to entertain the princes". 12
In culture, Fuk Xiang symbolizes good fortune and happiness. The traditional Fuk culture originated in ancient Chinese society and is a folk culture of seeking blessings. The "Five Blessings" in Fuk culture first appeared in the pre-Qin classic "Book of Documents": "First is longevity, second is wealth, third is peace and harmony, fourth is virtue, and fifth is a natural death", meaning long life, wealth, peace, virtue, and many descendants.
In historical documents, descriptions of "Fuk Xiang" are frequent. For instance, Shen Defu of the Ming Dynasty describes someone in his "Wild Gains Compilation" as "tall and imposing, with a lucky appearance". Likewise, Pu Songling of the Qing Dynasty mentions in his "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio": "The eldest brother is gentle and kind like a maiden, a lucky appearance".
