Summary

There is a newer better version, click image below:

This is a 1:12 or 1:20 scale model of the AIM-54 Phoenix long range missile used by the iconic US Navy's F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. This was a very long range missile for its time, capable of ranges around 100 miles compared to the other dominant missile of the era, the AIM-7 Sparrow, which at its max had a range of 38 miles.

Bambu Filaments Used

  • Matte Yellow
  • Matte Dark Brown
  • Basic White
  • Silk+ Silver

1:12 Scale Version Assembly

1. Start playing the Top Gun Theme – Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins

2. First connect the top pieces with the provided pegs as you see below.  There are longer and shorter pegs, however, since they are different sizes you can't accidentally put them in the wrong peg hole.  If a peg is too lose or too large, then use the other type of peg.

3. Lastly, insert a peg into the bottom of the pieces above before sliding it into the last remaining piece as you see below.

1:20 Scale Version Assembly

  1. Start playing the Top Gun Theme – Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins
  2. Refer to the diagram for assembly order
  3. Crap, I just accidentally re-watched all of Top Gun, where did the time go

Scaled up to 1/8 to fit with other models. I want to drill a hole in the bottom and put in a rocket motor

As much as I love your models...this one cannot be built. First there are no holes in the tail section for the add-on fins. Secondly, there is a problem with the pins. At one point a small pin needs to be inserted into a very large hole.

Thanks for letting me know! This model in particular was really finicky with tolerances, so I adjusted it a lot -- so I'm not surprised of all the models this would one where I'd have an older design that wasn't updated. I just updated the gray pieces, so the tail should be fixed with a fin hole. As for the other pegs, unless something is off, if a peg hole is too large, its because it is for the other type of peg brown/large vs yellow/small. I'll do a test print though and see if its all working right.

I updated the instructions to show which yellow/brown segments should be the large hole vs the small hole. If the hole is too big, then its meant for the smaller yellow peg, and likewise if the hole is too small then that piece is meant for the larger brown peg. If there's still an issue with the model itself though when it comes to peg sizes, please let me know, thanks! For most of my designs I try to make sure that I use different peg sizes where needed so its easier to tell when putting it together if you are using the wrong peg since it will be too big or too large....helps to make it such that a person could put it together possibly without the instructions even...and hopefully not accidentally put the wrong peg in the wrong hole and not be able to get it back out.

The pin problem was at the first ring down from the tip. I believe you can even see this in the diagram! If the first yellow pin is part #5, the hole in part #6 ends up being the size of the brown pin. I believe part #7 needs different size holes on either side. I'm pretty sure it wasn't like this...
