Description
I'm thrilled to share my second attempt at making a polyhedral lamp shade! This time, I chose a more organic shape, and the outcome has exceeded my expectations. The shadows it casts on the ceiling are amazing, and the light diffusion is perfect. After 15 hours of printing using 400g of filament, I couldn't be more delighted with the result!
I'd seen lamps like these in event centers, restaurants, showrooms and occasionally in houses and always loved the simple elegant design and always dreamed about having one in my home so I sat down and figured out how to make one myself. My first attempt was very geometric and simple, but I wanted something a bit larger and more elegant so I went about making this one, which uses curves instead of straight lines to create a more organic form and even better shadows.
The size is 50cm or 20" and it uses 6mm M3 bolts and washers for the connection points. You'll need 60 panels all together, 5 of which are the optional top pieces. The top has a larger hole for a cord grip and you will need 5 of these panels to form the top flower - a plate with 2 tops and another with one top have been provided. I strongly recommend using an electric screwdriver for the nuts and bolts to avoid a lot of stress, I did the first one by hand and it was a mission!
Assembly is very straightforward - you connect 5 of the pieces together at the “top” (the single hole farthest away from the other pairs) to create a circle or flower, and then you connect those flowers together to create a sphere - you can use the photos for guidance if needed.
The light pictured was printed using AMS where the bottom (outer) layer is brown, with the upper two (inner) layers are yellow to create contrast and shadow. If you don't have an AMS you can program a pause in the print to do this yourself. You can use any color you choose, I'm super keen to see one in black with a light blue center! Both AMS and Single Color versions are available.
I can make this available in other sizes, so if you want something smaller or larger, or need a different size hole for the top please let me know and I'll be happy to help!
